Volumetric Weight, Explained

Your 8 kg box just got billed as 25 kg. Here’s why — and how to work it out yourself.

Your supplier tells you the shipment weighs 8 kg. You budget accordingly. Then the freight invoice comes back charging you for 25 kg, and you’re left wondering whether you’ve been overcharged.

You haven’t. You’ve just met volumetric weight — and once you understand it, you’ll never be caught out again.

Why Airlines Charge This Way

An aircraft has two limits: how much weight it can carry, and how much space it has. A pallet of steel bolts hits the weight limit first. A pallet of foam packaging hits the space limit first — while barely registering on the scales.

If airlines only charged by actual weight, lightweight bulky cargo would fill the aircraft while generating almost no revenue. So the industry uses a standard formula that converts space into a weight equivalent.

The Formula
L (cm) × W (cm) × H (cm) ÷ 6000
= Volumetric weight in kg
You are charged on whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric weight

Work It Out in Three Steps

Measure the carton in centimetres — length, width, and height at the widest points, including any packaging.

Multiply the three numbers together, then divide by 6000. That gives you volumetric weight in kilograms.

Compare with the actual weight. The higher number is your chargeable weight. Multiply that by the per-kg rate.

How to Reduce Your Chargeable Weight

✅ Ask your supplier to compress packaging — vacuum-packing textiles can dramatically reduce carton size

✅ Request tighter carton sizing — many factories default to oversized boxes with excess void space

✅ Remove retail packaging where possible — ship bulk and repack in Australia if your product allows

✅ Consolidate multiple small cartons — one well-packed carton usually beats three half-empty ones

✅ Consider sea freight for bulky low-value goods — sea freight is priced on cubic metres and often works out better for these
