Air or Sea? A Decision Guide

Four questions that settle it in about two minutes.

There’s no universally correct answer — only the right answer for this particular shipment. The same importer might use air freight for a sample order in March and a full container by sea in June.

Here’s how to work out which one fits.

Four Questions

When do you actually need it? If the answer is “within two weeks,” air freight is the only realistic option. If you’re planning ahead by a month or more, sea opens up.

How dense is the product? Bulky and light gets punished by air freight’s volumetric weight formula. Small and heavy travels well by air.

How much is the freight worth relative to the goods? If freight is a small fraction of a high-value product, speed is cheap. If freight rivals the cost of the goods, slow down and go by sea.

Is this a test or a commitment? Sample and test orders almost always go by air. Proven, repeat product lines almost always go by sea.

Real Scenarios

✈️ Go by Air

Sample order before committing. Test the product, check quality, confirm the supplier is real.

Your bestseller just sold out. Three weeks of empty shelves costs more than the air freight premium.

Seasonal window closing. Product that arrives after the season has passed is worth far less.

🚢 Go by Sea

Planned quarterly restock. You know it’s coming, so build the lead time into your ordering cycle.

Heavy or bulky goods. Furniture, tiles, equipment — the air freight cost would be prohibitive.

Proven product line. You’ve sold it before, you know it moves, you’re buying volume.

The hybrid approach: Many established importers use both — sea freight for the bulk of the order, with a small air-freighted portion arriving first so they can start selling while the container is still in transit. Worth considering if your cash flow allows.
