If you’re sourcing product from China and need it in Australia in days rather than weeks, air freight is the answer. But the pricing catches a lot of first-time importers off guard — because air freight isn’t charged on the number on your bathroom scales.

Here’s a plain-English breakdown of what it costs, how long it takes, and what actually happens to your goods along the way.

The Basics at a Glance

Air vs sea pricing: Air freight is $10.99/kg door to door, charged on chargeable weight. If you’re moving larger volumes or heavier goods and can wait, our sea freight service starts from $2/kg — see our sea freight guide for a full comparison.

How Air Freight Is Actually Priced

This is the part that surprises people. Airlines charge based on volumetric weight (sometimes called dimensional or chargeable weight) — not just actual weight. Space on an aircraft is finite, so a large box of lightweight goods costs the airline just as much room as a small heavy one.

The Volumetric Weight Formula
Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 6000
= Volumetric weight in kilograms

You are charged on whichever is higher — the actual weight or the volumetric weight. For dense goods (hardware, tools, electronics) actual weight usually wins. For bulky, light goods (packaging, textiles, foam products, homewares) volumetric weight almost always does.

A Worked Example

Shipment Dimensions Actual Weight Volumetric Charged On
Box of tools 40 × 30 × 30 cm 18 kg 6 kg 18 kg (actual)
Box of cushions 60 × 50 × 50 cm 8 kg 25 kg 25 kg (volumetric)
Why this matters: If you quote your supplier’s stated weight without checking carton dimensions, your final invoice can differ significantly from your estimate. Always get carton dimensions from your supplier before requesting a quote.

The Journey: Warehouse to Your Door

1
Your supplier ships to our China warehouse — a standard domestic delivery within China. We provide the address and a reference to mark on the cartons.
2
Intake, consolidation & export clearance — goods are received, checked, weighed, measured, and cleared for export.
3
Air transit to Australia — typically the shortest leg of the journey.
4
Australian customs clearance — we handle the documentation and clearance process for you.
5
Final delivery — to your door, anywhere in Australia.
If your supplier can’t arrange delivery to our warehouse: Most factories handle this as routine, but if yours can’t, we can collect directly from them for an additional fee. Tell us when you book and we’ll quote that leg separately.
